Tech Assessment

Technical assessment that predicts on-the-job performance

Structured tech assessment focused on real-world engineering thinking. Live-coding with reverse engineering, pet-project walkthroughs, situational cases. Same framework for candidates and current employees considered for promotion.

What we measure (and what we deliberately don't)

Tech assessment that predicts real-world performance, not interview performance. We test for the thinking pattern, not for whether someone memorised LeetCode.

Decision-making in ambiguity

How does the candidate reason when the spec is incomplete? What signal do they pick up on first? Where do they push back vs. assume?

Context of prior decisions

Not "what technology did you use" — "why this and not that, at what point in the project, with what trade-off". Two paired "why" questions usually surface depth or surface knowledge.

Reverse engineering

15 minutes reading someone else's code (not yours, not theirs). What's happening, what would you change. Cannot be prepared in advance — surfaces real engineering intuition.

Pet project walkthrough

Screen-share through the candidate's own pet project. Where do you store users, how do you handle errors, how do you test. 10 minutes of this beats an hour of abstract Q&A.

What we don't test

LeetCode-style algorithm tricks divorced from real work. Trivia about the language standard library. Whiteboard system-design without business context.

For current employees too

Same framework used for promotion decisions and project team formation — often more valuable than external hiring.

Frequent questions

What is tech assessment and who is it for?
Structured assessment of technical skills for a candidate or current employee. Used when hiring senior+, deciding on a promotion, forming a team for a new project.
What methods do you use?
Live-coding with reverse engineering, pet-project walkthroughs, situational cases from your domain, paired 'why' questions about technical decisions. We don't ask textbook questions and we don't ask people to reverse linked lists.
Can you assess current employees?
Yes, and it's often more valuable than external hiring. It helps build a clear picture of team competencies, identify growth opportunities and future tech leads.
How long does one assessment take?
90-120 minutes of interview with the tech lead + 30 minutes of result debrief with you. Output: a detailed report broken down by competency cluster with concrete examples.
How is candidate data protected?
Consent for personal data processing is signed before the assessment. Interview recordings are kept only for the project duration and deleted afterwards. We don't share CVs or contact details with third parties. EU GDPR compliant.
Do you assess in English?
Yes — assessments are run in English, Russian or a mix. The tech lead interviewer is matched to the candidate's primary language.
